New Food Labelling Requirements from December 2014

BordBia

From December 2014, foodservice operators will need to adhere to new EU legislation that requires them to provide accurate information on the allergen status of the dishes that they serve.

The onus on caterers will be to ensure that details relevant to food allergies or intolerances are passed on to their customers. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland will hold responsibility for monitoring these new regulations.

The 13th December 2014 deadline also corresponds with the first major overhaul of Europe’s food labelling rules in 30 years and will apply to all businesses at all stages of the food chain.

Emphasis is on changes to food information (rather than food labelling) and includes requirements for on-pack mandatory nutritional information and allergen listing.

The new regulations are intended to modernise the existing system and the FSAI is encouraging all food companies to familiarise themselves via their New Food Information Regulation Booklet. For further information and a copy of the booklet, click here.
