It is with sad news that we report the death of Una McDermott Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford / Dublin who lectured at W.I.T, Kildalton College & the National Botanic Gardens. Funeral arrangements here.

Una was course leader for the BSc in Horticulture WD097 and liaises with Teagasc on the delivery of the course at the Botanic Gardens. Una trained in the Botanic Gardens (1980- 82) and worked in a number of gardening posts culminating as OPW Head Gardener of the War Memorial Park at Islandbridge during its extensive restoration.
She took a career break and returned to college as a mature student attending UCD and graduating with a BAgSc (Land Hort)(1996). Una was award a scholarship prize based on her 1st-year results and went on to win the Irish Landscape Institute student design award for her final year project.
Una completed an MA in Museum Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne achieving an MA with distinction (1997). She took the Specialism in Education and her Thesis was “Developing an Educational programme for the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin factors to consider”
She returned to work in Dúchas the Heritage service and amongst other work developed a 3-year public education strategy for the organisation, proposed and coordinated the first ‘Living History’ activities at Dúchas owned sites, and formalised free entry for schools to state-owned heritage sites.
Subsequently, Una moved into teaching and taught with Teagasc in the Botanic Gardens and Kildalton College before moving to WIT in 2001.
