Teagasc Safety Training Programme Launched

The Teagasc Farm Safety Code of Practice Training Programme for 2016-2017 was launched recently at the National Ploughing Championships. Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor T.D. joined with Andew Doyle T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to perform the launch.

Teagasc Health and safety Specialist John McNamara said that Half-Day courses will be available in all counties to assist farmers to comply with the requirement to complete, or revise, a farm Risk Assessment under the Farm Safety Code of Practice.

He also said that the Half-day training must be completed within the previous 5 years prior to submitting a TAMS11 claim for payment.  This condition also applies to persons who have been awarded the ‘Green Cert’ more than 5 years prior to the date of TAMS11 claim submission.

Farmers should contact their local Teagasc office to book a place on a Farm Safety course.

Minister Mitchell, who’s Department has responsibility for occupational safety health and welfare at work, complimented the Health and Safety Authority, Teagasc and member organisations of the Farm Safety Partnership for working together to cut the toll of tragedy, injury and ill health on Irish farms.

Minister Doyle said that the inclusion of a training requirement in TAMS11 is intended to positively assist farmers to examine their farms and practice to see what health and safety are needed. He also pointed out that significant funding is available under TAMS 11 to support farmers to make their farm’s both safer and more efficient workplaces.
