Sonairte, the Ecology Centre in Co. Meath, is currently seeking New Board Members to bring the centre to a new level through growth, employment and a major redevelopment project.

Centre Aims

Sonairte aims to promote sustainable living through learning and cooperation. This is achieved through an educational schools programme, adult and children’s courses, the visitor’s centre including a large walled garden, organic garden produce, as well as an ecoshop and ecocafé. The centre has grown from strength to strength in the last five years, and now employs two full time staff who are supported by a core team of dedicated volunteers. In the next 5 years, the centre aims to increase employment in the garden, improve marketing and fundraising as well as realise a major redevelopment project that has already obtained planning permission. Sonairte is a limited liability company by guarantee with charitable status.

The Role

The board is responsible for overseeing the financial and legal obligations of the centre and for ensuring that the centre’s direction and activities align with the long term aims. It should provide effective and strategic leadership and governance for the centre, support the centre’s steering committee and direct knowledge of Sonairte’s beneficiaries and users and of their needs and aspirations.

Board membership is voluntary. Members will have the opportunity to gain valuable and unique experience as there is considerable potential in the centre for growth and excellence. Board members are asked to contribute a minimum of 8 hours per month including one monthly meeting. The effectiveness of the board will be regularly reviewed and positions or members rotated as required.

Qualifications

While a broad range of applicants are welcome, the particular skills that are being sought include:

  • Legal
  • Accountancy
  • Marketing and Public Relations Expertise
  • HR / Training
  • Website / Social Media
  • Community Links – i.e. experience in building community relations
  • Ecology

Successful applicants will be good team players with communications skills and an ability to think strategically.
