In vivo evaluation of the influence of substrate type, nutrient regime and IPM approach on the agronomic and economic returns in long cane substrate grown raspberry under protection.

Ref Walsh Fellowship Number 2014038

Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development authority, and UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science are offering a 2 year MSc in the area of raspberry long cane production. Techniques for the production of containerised raspberry long canes with high yield potential will be studied at Ashtown Food Research Centre with the candidate registered at UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science. Specifically, substrate type (coir, peat and various ratios) will be assessed and nutritional regimes encompassing quantity and timing of fertigation will be assessed to derive the best feed co-efficient for containerised production.

Current and new IPM strategies for long cane production under protection will be assessed, including the use of biological control agents, bio-stimulants and cultural practices The outcome of each approach will be economically appraised in the context of commercial production. The candidate must have a have a first or upper second class honours degree, in Horticulture, Biology or a related discipline, and must have an interest in modern fruit production techniques. The project will include extensive training in raspberry crop husbandry and numerous different analytical techniques. The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of long cane raspberry production that will enable the development of definitive recommendations for substrate type, nutrient regime and IPM approach for different varieties.

The MSc Scholarship will be €22,000 per annum for two years (including tuition fees). Extensive field work is envisaged and it would be preferable for the candidate to have a full driving licence. The project is jointly supervised by Dr Owen Doyle and Dr. Caroline Elliot – Kingston of the UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science and Dr Michael Gaffney and Mr Dermot Callaghan of the Teagasc Horticulture Development Department, Ashtown Food Research Centre, Dublin 15.

 Application Procedure
