Would you like to inform your consumer on how to best cook your product? Would you be interested in offering extra information on your product USPs? Thanks to AECOC, the Association for Manufacturers and Distributors, this may all be possible, at the touch of a button.
AECOC, presented this week at Alimentaria food fair in Barcelona, a consumer information smart phone service that has been labeled as “a pioneering initiative”. The potential for smart phones seems limitless as discussed in a previous article.
eScan is a system which allows consumers to obtain information on food products by capturing the bar code of the article via their smart phones. To date, the application has collected information on over 2,000 companies such as Danone, Eroski, Pepsico, Central Lechera Asturiana and Bodegas San Benedetto Santalba. AECOC, expects to have obtained information on 30,000 items and to have 100 partner companies attached to the service by the end of the year.
eScan is a window into the online communication between businesses and consumers, offering advantages to both groups. The former will have the possibility to communicate with 10 million potential consumers in Spain, while the latter is given immediate access to reliable information straight from the source. AECOC claims that thanks to this new application the consumer will have instant access to detailed nutritional information, the full list of ingredients, and an allergy information section (gluten, dairy, nuts, eggs etc.). In addition, the platform could link the consumer to videos, facebook pages, wine tasting notes and cooking instructions.
The application could potentially be a great source of differentiation for Irish companies wishing to communicate our unique qualities with consumers in a relevant, engaging and informative manner. To date, the system is only available for the Spanish market and its cost is €3,000.
