The latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel indicate a significant upturn in the fortunes of the organic sector in the Irish grocery market. Building on the momentum of last year’s growth of 6.9%, the figures published to August 14th this year indicate an increase of 23.7% which equates to a total value of €142m of grocery sales.

93.6% of Irish shoppers are purchasing organics goods, on average once every two weeks. They are also making more organic purchasing trips, while the average price per pack sold has decreased by 10%, with 55% of spend going on branded rather than private label goods.

SuperValu is the leading Organic retailer in value terms but Tesco remains on top in volume terms.

Interestingly Aldi has put in a strong performance on both value and volume share. It also has the highest trip volume in the market – over 3 packs per trip. While Lidl is decreasing in both it is still the overall value and volume leader in the discount channel in Ireland.

Tesco has more Organic shoppers than any other retailer with almost 1m buyers. Shoppers at Supervalu make the most frequent trips to buy Organic at 15 trip per year. Spend per trip is highest at Dunnes with €3.90 spent on Organic products.

The overall market growth trend in all lifestyle stages, apart from pre-family, is expected to continue and could provide opportunities for Irish organic suppliers, particularly those considering the shopper mission and health and wellness trends.
