The global organic trend keeps increasing and is now valued at 76 billion euros. The German organic sector is the second largest following the U.S.A, generating 8.2 billion euros. The organic movement in Germany started approximately a 100 years ago, which makes it “the country with the longest tradition in organic farming and marketing for health products”. It comes as no surprise that the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food, BIOFACH, is annually hosted in Germany.

It all started in 1991 in Ludwigshafen (Germany) with 197 exhibitors and approximately 2,500 visitors. 26 years later, over 2,300 exhibitors gather in Nuremberg, Southern Germany, filling 38,000 square meters across 9 halls, showcasing the finest and most interesting trends the organic food sector currently has to offer. Over 50,000 trade visitors from 130 countries around the world experience the Bord Bia Consumer Lifestyle Trends in action during the four-day event.

Twelve companies from Ireland used this great opportunity to present their organic product range(s) and brands to the world, with 10 of them exhibiting under the Bord Bia / Origin Green umbrella.

NUA Naturals is a shining example of the significance of Health and Wellbeing and highlighted their new turmeric latte. A simple to use instant Indian ayurvedic drink combining the health benefits of curcumin with an amazing taste.

Underlining the Keeping it real trend, Irish Country Meats is the leading processor of organic lamb in Ireland, supporting organic sheep farmers. BIOFACH is a great stage to present their niche organic lamb products to a larger audience. For buyers targeting flexitarians, who tend to eat less meat but usually look for premium quality, such products are very appealing.

The global organic food sector is expected to grow further over the coming years, offering more room for product innovation, and the possibility of new trends. BIOFACH will open its doors again from 14 – 17 February 2018, offering companies the opportunity to reach most of their important target groups (in 2016, 93 % of the exhibitors reported to have done so). This will be another opportunity for Irish producers to present their organic products to a world audience!
