The wood fibre product ‘Klasmann GreenFibre’ now also carries the RHP quality label. Klasmann-Deilmann has therefore received a long-term endorsement of the suitability of this substrate base material for use in commercial horticulture. Klasmann-Deilmann has therefore received a long-term endorsement of the suitability of this substrate base material for use in commercial horticulture. In the past year, Klasmann GreenFibre had already been certified to PEFC standards.
To ensure consistently high quality, the production facility for Klasmann GreenFibre was certified by ECAS on the basis of strict RHP standards. As part of the certification process, compliance with quality criteria had previously been verified over a six-month period. Klasmann GreenFibre is currently the only wood fibre product that bears the RHP quality label.
Product monitoring included mandatory ongoing checks as follows:
- Chemical nutrient analyses;
- Tests for ‘active’ manganese;
- Analysis for heavy metals;
- Nitrogen fixation;
- Investigation of physical properties;
- Testing for weeds;
- Phytosanitary tests used to verify that, during the production process, a temperature that kills off phytopathogens is reached;
- Checks for phytopathogenic nematodes.
Klasmann GreenFibre is also subjected to extensive biotests in a neutral laboratory, involving lettuce, cress and Chinese cabbage, in order to ensure (on a continuous basis) that plants are tolerant of the fibres.
The production facility was certified to PEFC standards in June 2011, confirming that only woodchips from sustainable forestry are used to produce Klasmann GreenFibre.
Klasmann-Deilmann commissioned its production facility for its own wood fibres on the Geeste site in 2010. This unit uses state-of-the-art production technology that makes it possible to create wood fibres with only a minimum proportion of fine particles. The special structure of Klasmann GreenFibre ensures high air capacity, maximum drainage and long-term structural stability in growing media (including container substrates). Applications for Klasmann GreenFibre now include root-sensitive bromeliads.
