While ITB also offers ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ as a course, the horticulture department at ITB are putting it into action through their community work in ITB Horticulture Update – Bloom 2012, Community Projects & Student Placements. The idea that is sometimes proffered in the media that lecturers in general are giving classes 10 hours a week is just not real and this article accounts for some of the varied roles that ITB horticulture staff undertake. They are proactive in developing community links which also gives them the chance to offer ‘Real’ work experience to students. Other roles include sourcing suitable work placements for high calibre students (still some available for your business) and also on the road at events like Bloom trying to inspire the next batch of potential graduates makes for busy times. Horticulture being used for the good of the wider community is also important to Lorna MacMahon who is Raising Funds for Galway Mental Health Association with Garden Open Days and also Eden Regeneration Project Offering Horticulture Training who are trying to bring calmness to the lives of troubled teens. If you as a business see some way of supporting any of these worthy causes please get in touch with the promoters

In a sector that is quietly thriving and developing under the stewardship of the Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association and Dr. Eamonn Kehoe the Soft Fruit Industry Seminar Report on the recent conference shows the increasing ability of that sector to supply the home market over a wider period of the year through the large financial investment of growers and it also shows that our exports are improving too which is good news all round. Also Eamonn sees more opportunities “There are possibilities for savvy people who spot a lack of supply in their local area to get into the business. Over the last year some people who have lost their jobs have entered the business and are now growing strawberries.” It is not all about ‘FoodHarvest 2020’ targets and it is positve news that entering the world of horticulture as a way to make a livelihood is still possible through hard work and relatively small investments.
