As part of Defra’s feedback on the Sustainable Growing Media Task Force report, a £1 million five-year programme, managed in partnership with the Horticultural Development Company (the horticultural division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board), and half funded by Government has been announced today. The programme of research and knowledge exchange will help make significant advances towards overcoming barriers to alternatives to peat and demonstrating the viability of alternative products.

Neil Bragg, Chairman of HDC said, “The news of this significant investment by Government into research and development around peat alternatives is very welcome. We are pleased that the Sustainable Growing media Task Force has identified that further research is imperative and it will be HDC’s role to help shape and identify the key areas for research and development – and ensuring that results that demonstrate best practice are fed back to the horticultural industry.”

“As the knowledge hub for information that directly meets the needs of industry and growers we want to see research that directly tackles industry issues, contributes to business sustainability and delivers practical solutions.”
