Three CAFRE floristry students are heading to London to compete in this year’s RHS Chelsea Florist & Young Florist of the Year Competition. Ann Kirkwood from Derry/Londonderry, a first-time finalist in the RHS Chelsea Florist competition, Megan Ingram from Belfast who was placed first in the local heat held in Greenmount Campus for the young Chelsea florist and Clare McAuley from Comber, returning for a second year to the same competition.
The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Spring Wedding’ and competitors must create a floral wedding throne with at least two thirds of the design being made from fresh flowers and/or plant material.
The students also featured on BBC Radio Ulster’s Gardeners’ Corner programme, when David Maxwell visited Greenmount Campus to speak to the students and their floristry lecturer Anne Marie Grant about their experience of reaching the finals of the RHS Chelsea Florist & Young Florist of the Year Competition. Check out their interview below.
David here – well it's certainly flower show season now and the most famous of them all is coming up next week, it is of course the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Three students from Greenmount (Clare McAuley, Ann Kirkwood and Megan Ingram) are heading there for the final of the young florist contest and you can hear all three on Gardeners' Corner this Saturday morning.
