Award recognises Bord na Móna’s sustainable supply chain involving 377 separate business suppliers.

Bord na Móna has seen off stiff competition from some of the world’s biggest corporations to win a coveted Green Award. The company was awarded The Green Supply Chain Award at a ceremony in Dublin recently.

Accepting the award for Bord na Móna, Group Procurement Manager, Declan McDonnell said “We are obviously delighted to win this award. Bord na Móna has committed itself to a green supply chain that has enabled us to reduce waste, improve product and protect service quality.

This award is a timely recognition of what we at Bord na Móna and our suppliers have achieved. We have worked hard with our suppliers on this strategy that has yielded significant cost savings as well as substantial environmental benefits. I hope this award helps highlight to other companies the significant commercial advantages involved in sustainable business strategies. It is also a huge endorsement of our entire approach in this area”.

Bord na Móna launched its sustainable business strategy, ‘A new Contract with Nature’, in 2008. As part of this startegy it introduced a Green Supply policy for suppliers last year.

In order to monitor sustainability across its suppliers, the company partnered with cloud computing firm Nootrol. Nootrol’s monitoring system, allowed Bord na Móna to measure and track sustainability performance across its business suppliers.

Bord na Móna spends some €200million per annum across its suppliers of goods and services. The green supply policy now means that it has engaged with 377 different suppliers with a view to identifying opportunities for more efficient use of water, waste, carbon and other environmental impacts.
