With as much as a third of total household spending going on groceries the numbers are a key marker of consumer activity.
The latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland show German discounters Aldi and Lidl are the main winners as households loosen the purse strings, gaining market share at the expense of Tesco and Dunnes.
Musgrave-owned Supervalu, which includes the old Superquinn chain, is also increasing its share of the market. It has become the second biggest grocery in the country, with a 24.9pc share of the market, behind Tesco’s 26pc but ahead of Dunnes’ which has 21.1pc.
Multiples dominate the grocery trade, accounting for almost €9 out of every €10 spent. But the rise and rise of Aldi and Lidl is shaking up the sector.
Tesco’s share of the Irish market has slipped from 27.6pc a year ago, Dunnes is more or less unchanged, but Aldi’s share of the market has increased by close 20pc and Lidl’s is up 12pc.
Between them the German discounters now hold more than 16pc of the grocery market, making them almost as big as one of the big three.
