For the first time in many years, Ireland is proudly celebrating a homegrown winner of the prestigious Young Horticulturist of the Year Grand Final. Sarah Simpson, a dedicated horticultural technician based at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, has claimed the coveted title, standing out among a field of exceptionally talented finalists.
Hosted on a sun-soaked Saturday at the beautiful Hillsborough Castle, the competition brought together the brightest young minds in horticulture. Guided by the expert hosting and quizmaster skills of Claire Woods, Head Gardener at the Historic Royal Palace, the day was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and inspiration.
Sarah’s victory not only brings honour to Ireland’s horticultural community but also secures her a £2,500 travel bursary, generously awarded by the Percy Thrower Trust. This bursary is designed to support further learning and exploration in horticulture—an exciting next step in what is sure to be a flourishing career.
A full event report will follow, but this remarkable achievement couldn’t wait to be shared. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-earned triumph!
