This year, the GLDA Seminar will be live streamed on Saturday 26th February 2022, with access to videos of the keynote talks available after the event.
Today, they have announced their second speaker: Gerald Mills, Associate Professor of Physical Geography, School of Geography at UCD.
Gerald completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at UCD and then went to the US in 1984 to complete a PhD at The Ohio State University. It was there that his interest focused on climates, especially as they relate to cities.
For the last 30 years he has worked on urban climates using modelling and observations to understand how urbanisation (the transformation of the landscape) alters the atmosphere especially, but also the hydrosphere and the biosphere.
He continued this work when he returned to Ireland in 1997, back to UCD. Now, most of his focus is on helping to improve urban climate science globally, including establishing links with urban decision-makers.
In Ireland, he has worked with others on the green infrastructure of Dublin and on mapping its trees. This research is ongoing and will form part of a project that will map Greenhouse gas emissions and sequestration across Ireland and especially in Dublin. He will explain more about this project at the GLDA seminar.
He is co-author of Urban Climates, which is the major text on the field. He has played a number of roles in the International Association for Urban Climates (IUAC), including President. He is the recipient of the 2021 Luke Howard Award for lifetime contributions to the field of urban climatology. www.ucd.ie/gerald.mills.
