At the heart of this ongoing transformation is the esteemed landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, who provides annual oversight and guidance, ensuring the garden’s evolution aligns with the owner’s ambitious vision. A Rare and Rewarding Opportunity
The gardens, open to the public for 60 days each year, require a committed professional with extensive horticultural expertise. The role is both challenging and fulfilling, offering a chance to engage in a diverse range of responsibilities within a stunning and historic setting.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Craft Gardener will play an essential role in maintaining and enhancing the estate’s horticultural legacy. Duties will include:
- Expert maintenance of rose gardens, perennial borders, and glasshouse/indoor plant collections.
- Ensuring the highest standards of plant cultivation and garden presentation.
Collaborating closely with a skilled gardening team to execute the garden’s development plans. - Working under the broader design framework provided by Tom Stuart-Smith, ensuring that all enhancements reflect his vision and expertise.
- Organising daily tasks, prioritising seasonal work, and overseeing junior gardening staff where required.
Who We Are Looking For
This role is suited to a highly experienced gardener with a passion for historic landscapes and a commitment to excellence. Essential qualifications and experience include:
- A proven track record in high-level horticultural maintenance, particularly in formal gardens.
- A thorough knowledge of plant cultivation and garden design principles.
- At least five years’ experience in a similar role within a large estate or heritage setting.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to lead a team and work independently when needed.
- A relevant horticultural qualification, such as QQI Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture / RHS Level 2 or 3, or equivalent practical experience.
- PA1 and PA6 Spraying Certificates (advantageous but not essential).
- A full driving licence.
- A pre-employment medical assessment.
