New Daffodil ‘Paul Smyth’ Honours RHSI Bellefield Head Gardener

The Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland (RHSI) proudly celebrated a special occasion as Paul Smyth, head gardener at RHSI Bellefield, was presented with a daffodil named in his honour. The newly named Narcissus ‘Paul Smyth’ is a stunning hybrid developed by the distinguished Omagh-based daffodil breeder, Brian Duncan.

Brian Duncan, who has dedicated over 50 years to the art of daffodil breeding, is internationally acclaimed for his exceptional contributions to horticulture. Among his many accolades is the prestigious RHS Victoria Medal of Honour, a testament to his lifelong commitment to excellence. Narcissus ‘Paul Smyth’, a class 11a bulb, represents a remarkable cross between Narcissus ‘Tickled Pink’ and Narcissus ‘Rocoza’.

The daffodil was named to acknowledge Paul Smyth’s outstanding work in transforming Bellefield House and Garden into the vibrant headquarters of the RHSI. This significant milestone was made possible following the property’s bequest to the society in 2021 by the late Angela Jupe, a visionary supporter of Irish horticulture.

RHSI Bellefield Garden, under Paul Smyth’s dedicated care, is steadily evolving into a significant destination for gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Visitors can witness the ongoing development and charm of this historic garden on select weekends throughout 2025.
