ILI Lecture | ‘The Role of Future Landscape Researchers and Designers’ – by Professor Wolfgang Wende
Date: 18:00 – 19:30 Wednesday 19 Feb 25
The Spencer Hotel’s Orion Suite, Excise Walk, IFSC, Dublin 1
The transformation of our society towards truly sustainable development will necessarily have a huge impact on our landscapes.
Clearly, their appearance is set to undergo large-scale changes; equally, the protection of the ecological functions of nature, landscape and ecosystems will become more central to our discipline of landscape architecture than previously. Regenerative energy landscapes, industry 4.0 landscapes and the large-scale restoration of ecosystems and habitats for biodiversity are all developments that pose major challenges for landscape architects.
Who else, apart from landscape architects, with their expertise, can deal with the spatial planning of thousands of wind turbines and new power lines for energy supply?
Who else, apart from landscape architects, should and can, for example, restore 20% of degraded ecosystems in every EU member state?
Who else, apart from landscape architects, can make a substantive and positive contribution to future landscape transformations?

ILI CPD Webinar | Turning the grey to green: plant driven design in Sheffield by Sally O’Halloran Associate Professor Norwegian University of Life Sciences
1-2pm Thursday 27 March 2025
The Grey to Green in Sheffield, is the UK’s largest retro-fit SuDS project. It is an award winning project for multiple reasons but this talk will look at it in terms of planting design.
With plant-driven design led by landscape architect Zac Tudor and Prof. Nigel Dunnett it has led the way to inspire spaces in cities that are more than just about managing water runoff. This talk will look at their approach and how you might turn the grey to green in your projects.
Sally O’ Halloran has been involved in horticulture/landscape management for over 30 years in a career that has seen her gain experience both operational (NBG Glasnevin, Longwood Gardens in America, RHS Wisley) and managerial (Kilkenny Castle Park, Emo Court and Heywood Gardens in Laois) in public gardens worldwide and most recently in higher education in the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Norway.
Having trained and worked in the ‘Sheffield School’ her teaching and research focus is on plants used by landscape professionals in urban and rural landscapes and how they can be used to develop resilient and high-impact planting designs.
