Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) is pleased to announce the launch of the National Apprenticeship in Arboriculture, a comprehensive two-year program designed to cultivate the next generation of professional arborists in Ireland.
Program Overview
The Arborist Apprenticeship offers a blend of on-the-job and off-the-job training, providing apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage trees, hedgerows, and shrubs in various settings. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Arboriculture, positioning them as qualified professionals in the field.

The apprenticeship covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Tree Identification
- Soil Science, Tree Planting & Establishment
- Legislation, Regulation, Health & Safety
- Arboriculture Operations
- Pests, Diseases & Disorders
- Tree Surveys & Management
- This structured curriculum ensures that apprentices gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, essential for a successful career in arboriculture.
Employer Collaboration
Developed in partnership with industry employers, the program emphasizes real-world experience. Apprentices are employed by approved employers throughout the apprenticeship, receiving a salary and mentorship from experienced professionals. This collaboration ensures that training aligns with industry standards and meets the evolving needs of the sector.
Entry Requirements
Prospective apprentices must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a Level 4 Award or equivalent, or a minimum of 12 months’ relevant experience
- Demonstrate English language competence at B1 level in reading and writing
- Have an interest in working outdoors and a good head for heights
- Additionally, prerequisites such as First Aid, Safe Pass, and Manual Handling certifications are required.
