Teagasc Botanic Gardens – Try Horticulture Virtual Open Day

The month of May has brought renewed hope to the country with the lifting of more restrictions on May 10th which will be hugely welcomed by us all. The last 4 months in the College has seen us having to ramp up our online capability and our staff and students have responded hugely to this challenge and all programmes are running according to schedule and completion dates are still on target.

Currently we are conducting outdoor practical and assessment sessions with our students until the first week in June and we are also scheduling exams throughout May on our certificate and degree programmes. Our Certificate students have returned from an 8 week industry placement in March and April while our Advanced Certificate students and second year degree students have started their placement this semester also. Students are delighted to be out working in practical horticulture after what has been a very tough 5 months for all.

There is strong interest in our courses for the coming year with applications up from previous years. Level 5 certificate applications will close on 28th May this year and we will start to make offers of places shortly thereafter.

Next year we expect blended learning to continue in our college as we are still cognisant of the threat that the pandemic poses. To that end we are asking all potential students in the college next year to have a suitable device in the form of either a laptop/tablet with a camera and broadband accessibility to enable blended learning to take place.

This month’s TRY Horticulture virtual event will focus on providing up to date details on all our horticultural programs that we offer in the National Botanic Gardens. The event will be hosting by our Principal John Mulhern who’ll be joined by current students to discuss all aspects of the student experience in the college. College staff will be on hand to describe the course options in more detail and talk about how the course will be run in 2021.

If you are interested in studying horticulture, this event is not be missed.

The event will be virtual and will be held on Friday 28th May at 12.30 pm and it can be booked on eventbrite. The link to our Eventbrite page for our next Try Horthttps://bit.ly/3f8vbG7
