Expo organisers from future AIPH-approved International Horticultural Expos travelled from across the globe to the Portuguese Iberostar Selection Lisboa hotel in Lisbon to present progress reports regarding their mega events at the International Horticultural Expo Conference for the AIPH Spring Meeting.
At the heart of a great Expo is the Master Plan, which is the most challenging part for Expo organisers. To help with the complexity of planning these mega-events, AIPH has created the Expo Master Planning Guide in collaboration with ARCADIS – a global design, engineering, and management consulting company.
It was launched at the Expo Conference on Monday, 13 March, and is available to download from the AIPH website.
This first-of-its-kind project was driven by AIPH International Relations Manager Elena Terekhova and supported by an intern from Beijing Forestry University, Ms Yunlin Li, who collected and analysed the Master Plans of past Expos spanning more than 60 years.
AIPH then worked with John Boon, Arcadis Director of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. He has over 25 years of experience as a landscape architect and was appointed chief designer of the World Horticultural Expo Floriade 2012 in Venlo, Netherlands.
With this year-long collaboration across cultures and disciplines, the AIPH Expo Master Planning Guide was launched to help Expo Organisers learn methodologies and best practices beneficial for the master planning of both the Expo site and its legacy. It contains Expo case studies, examples of Masterplans and their pros and cons, and consideration of broader urban integration; this work will interest every urbanist, landscape architect, city planner, developer or Expo Organiser.
The Master Plan is a development vision of an Expo project. Every AIPH-approved International Horticultural Expo is unique in its challenges and opportunities; the Expo Organisers must juggle these goals along with issues regarding scope, budget, communication and more.
Recordings of the Expo Conference progress reports will soon be available to watch on AIPH YouTube.
AIPH is proud to have approved and supported more than 50 International Horticultural Exhibitions since 1960. Until 2028, there are International Horticultural Expos in P. R. China, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand, and Türkiye. View Forthcoming Expos here.
