As part of its Horticulture degree programme UCD has made two recent appointments Dr Mary Harty and Dr Noeleen Smyth, details below:
Dr Mary Harty:
Following over fifteen years working in the IT Industry, Mary returned to education and studied horticulture in the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin and at University College Dublin (UCD). She completed a Masters of Environmental Science also at UCD and PhD with Queens University Belfast / Teagasc Environmental Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Wexford. This work examined nitrogen (N) fertiliser formulations on N cycling and gaseous emissions in grassland soils. Since then she has worked as a post-doctoral researcher on the Crop optimisation through sensing, understanding and visualisation (CONSUS) project at UCD. She has recently been appointed as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Horticulture at UCD.
Dr Noeleen Smyth
Dr Noeleen Smyth is a botanist and horticulturist. She has an Honors Degree in Botany and PhD. from Trinity College Dublin (TCD). She is a chartered horticulturist trained at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Wisley, England. She has worked for many years in the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, London & the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin (OPW), and has held roles in consultancy & government in various practical and research roles related to horticulture, botany, biodiversity and conservation policy. She has recently been appointed an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Horticulture, within the Environment & Sustainable Resource Management (ESRM) section of Agriculture at University College Dublin (UCD).
