The organic food sector in Italy is continuing to experience strong growth. This has been the trend since early 2012 after a long period of stagnation. The most significant figure relates to household consumption of organic products. According to figures recently published by ISMEA (Agricultural Statistics Office) for the first 6 months of 2013, household spending on organic products was up 8.8% on the same period of 2012. Spending in July was up 9.2% compared with a year earlier.
Currently 9% of total food products produced in Italy are said to be organic, which is one of the highest levels internationally. In terms of land dedicated to organic production, Italy is ranked 7th on a global scale and 8th in terms of the actual number of farms producing organic products.
Italy represents a success story in organic production taking advantage of a favourable climate, suitable land, and close geographic access to major export markets. The State has also provided relatively high financial support for organic producers, and this has played an important part in the development of the sector.
Meanwhile, a new margarine has appeared on the market produced solely from certified organic ingredients. The new product, produced by Valle’ Italia (a well-known producer of margarines and spreads) is distinguished by the absence of hydrogenated fats, artificial flavourings or preservatives. The product can be used as a spread or for cooking.
