Commenting on ‘Going for Growth’, Minister Farry said “The importance of the agri-food sector to Northern Ireland’s economy cannot be underestimated. Over the last year, my Department has been working with leading employers from the food and drink manufacturing and processing sector, including the Chair of the Agri-Food Strategy Board Tony O’Neill, to put in place an action plan to address the skills shortages identified within this sector.
“The importance of this work is recognised within the Agri-Food Strategy and indeed the model is recommended for use across other industries such as farming, fishing and forestry.
“Key pieces of work undertaken to date include the continued funding of the Tasty Careers sectoral attractiveness programme, the ongoing development of an Engineering Apprenticeship for the food industry and a HR Conference to help employers establish links with training providers and access available provision. I look forward to continuing our work with employers.”
