From July a new logo for organic products will be required throughout the EU. The EU have introduced the new organic logo to create more transparency. Critics see room for improvement. “The new logo symbolizes a kind of marriage between Europe and nature,” says Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos. Besides the logo, a verification code will made the origin of raw materials obvious. It distinguishes between EU sources, non-EU sources and a mixed variant.
The logo is intended only for packaged organic products produced in an EU Member State. The obligation does not apply to ‘bulk’ and fresh fruit and vegetables. Other exceptions are fish and meat, cosmetics and textiles.
