London-based designer Sebastian Bergne is making his mark at the Covent Garden Design Festival this year with an idea based upon using LEGO bricks to explore the possibilities of building structures out of the well-known toy in public spaces.
Inspired by Covent Garden’s design and cultural history, and commission by LEGO, he created this amazing LEGO brick greenhouse.
Covent Garden’s history of stunning art exhibits made it the perfect host for Sebastian’s work. He was asked by LEGO to create his public exhibit, utilising their famous bricks, as part of the Design Festival’s entrance, and the result was this spectacular greenhouse, made completely out of LEGO and filled with fresh, natural plants and vegetables.
It is built entirely from LEGO bricks, from the clear ceiling and walls, to the floor and even the ‘soil’ is made of bricks. Working just like a real greenhouse, Sebastian’s version houses a number of thriving plant species. He says, “Its pitched roof references reflect the architecture that surrounds it, while the plants inside bring nature back to this area once famous for its garden trade.”
Sebastian’s amazing creation can be found next to the Covent Garden market building, at the bottom of James Street, from September 15th to 25th 2011. For more information about this, and the other exhibits on display, visit the London Design Festival website.
