Here we see a photo report of the fruit and vegetable section of Glanmire’s SuperValu (Cork), awarded best supermarket of the chain in 2012.

The section is at the entrance of the store and is composed of a long vegetable display stand on the left (tomatoes, carrots, courgettes, peppers, cabbages, Savoy cabbages, celery, onions, mushrooms, pumpkins, etc.).

A mirror is placed above the shelves to make the stands look bigger than they really are.

Another stand is placed before the vegetable shelves where packaged products such as soft fruits, salads, spinach etc. are arranged. On the other side of the vegetable stand, there’s a small display for aromatic plants (photo on the right). Products on special offer are arranged at the centre of the section with ‘3 products for €2’ formulas, really affordable with respect to the average prices of fruit and vegetables. Other central stands display fruit, specially packaged and also loose, whereas the last one on the opposite side is for potatoes. Almost all of the produce on sale comes from abroad, mainly from Spain, Germany and Holland, but also from South America, South Africa and there’s even Chinese garlic.

National Irish products are potatoes, carrots, other tuber vegetables, some apples, some types of salad and some soft fruit.

Only a few aromatic plants come from Italy.

As a promotional initiative, SuperValu collaborates with chef Kevin Dundon, testimonial of the supermarket, who creates recipes for customers so that they can fully take advantage of the fresh produce on sale.

In the photo below: chef Kevin Dundon (on the left) and Mr. Ryan (on the right), owner of the store, with two Italian clients, Raffaella and Alessandra Valenti. Click here for the complete photo report.
