Merrick Denton-Thomson OBE FLIThe Landscape Profession is uniquely positioned between society and natural systems to transform both town and country to meet many of the key challenges we are all facing. Populations are expanding but the earth and its resources are finite, here in the UK and Ireland we are experiencing the resulting tensions sooner than many parts of the world. The densification of our towns and cities, the state of our water, our air and our soils, the reliance we have on unsustainable food production systems and the deterioration of our health and wellbeing – all combine to set the new agenda for the Landscape Profession. Sustainable solutions and building resilience are the new imperatives.The lecture is free and all are welcome. About the Speaker: 
Merrick Denton-Thompson is President, Trustee, and Fellow of the Landscape Institute. He has worked in local government and the voluntary sector for all of his career. He left local government as the Assistant Director of the Environment at Hampshire County Council where he was responsible for environmental policies in strategic planning, rural affairs, and the countryside service. He was appointed to the Board of Natural England by the Secretary of State to assist in the development of the new government agency in 2006 – 2009. He directed the Rural Pathfinder for the South East of England in 2002, was a member of the Cross-Compliance Board for the Single Farm Payment and a member of the Agri-Environment Review Group which set up the Environmental and Countryside Stewardship Schemes. He is the founding Trustee of the Learning Through Landscapes Trust. He is a member of the South Downs National Park Design Panel.
