Growers dive into composting and technology at Kelly Nursery Event organised by Teagasc

Approximately 60 nursery growers and students attended a highly successful technical event held at Kelly Nursery, focusing on practical composting techniques, cutting-edge technology, and vital industry updates.

Live Demos and Composting Know-How
The day kicked off with an engaging live demonstration by Eoin Kelly of the new Eco Green Shredder composting equipment. Attendees got a hands-on look at the entire process, viewing green waste at different stages, all the way through to final screened and mature compost.

Following the demo, Dónall Flanagan and Dr. Eoghan Corbett provided an invaluable review of the composting process. They highlighted the critical elements for success, emphasising the importance of monitoring temperature and timely turning.

High-Tech Nursery Management
The focus then shifted to the nursery’s impressive infrastructure, with Billy Kelly demonstrating their high-tech systems. This included the Aqua Hort fertigation and copper ion dosing system used for precise nutrient delivery, as well as the operation of their substantial rainwater harvesting tanks.

Technical Testing and Industry Insights
In the afternoon, the group was treated to a technical demonstration by Dr. Corbett on how to test growing media for pH, EC, and phytotoxicity—essential skills for quality control.

Consultant Alice McGlynn then provided a crucial industry update, offering an overview of her work with the Minor Use Working Group. This group is vital in helping to identify gaps and opportunities for plant protection product registration in Ireland.

The final, important presentation came from Tamsen Harward of DAFM. She reminded growers of the recent census of the sector and stressed the critical need for strong engagement from growers to ensure the census accurately reflects the industry’s size and value. The next census is scheduled for 2026.

The day concluded with attendees enjoying a well-deserved lunch on-site, providing a great opportunity to network and share valuable feedback on the informative event.

The event was organised by Dónall Flanagan, Teagasc Nursery Specialised Stock Advisor and kindly hosted by Kellys Nursery.
